'A' Division
Yonkers Railsplitters (2-0) vs. Brooklyn Dodgers (4-3) - Saturday, May 4 @Governor's Field
The reigning 'A' champions have been sidelined since Week 1 due to inclement weather, which means rust could be an issue when they take on the Dodgers this weekend. The Railsplitters have not seen live-game action since April 7, but the Dodgers have been one of the more active teams over the last month, with seven games under their belts.
Tom Alongi's Brooklyn club has put up solid offensive numbers thus far, as the Dodgers are currently averaging 7.6 runs per game. This week, however, they will be contending with a Yonkers' staff that is considered to be one of the most talented in the division despite the small sample size. The Dodgers' three losses have all come in one-run games, so they should be looking for a breakthrough in decisive late-game scenarios.
NY Patriots (3-1) vs. Nassau Yankees (2-3) - Sunday, May 5 @College Point
With three early-season games against the Railsplitters and the Dodgers, the Yankees have had to contend with some of the toughest teams in the division right off the bat. This week should be no different, as they take on the Pats, who have been solid in their first NYCMBL season. At 3-1, the Patriots have authored victories over the Skyscrapers and the Astros, due mostly to a balanced offense that has five everyday players hitting over .400.
In head-to-head comparisons, however, the Yankees had an easier time of things against the Astros last Saturday, and seem to be turning things around as the weather heats up. Look for Jose DeJesus of the Patriots to be a difference-maker this weekend, as the veteran has excelled at the plate and on the mound, hitting .444 and posting a 1.68 ERA thus far.
'AA' Division
Cross Bronx indians (3-1) vs. Bronx Pirates (5-2) - Sunday, May 5 @Kennedy
After jumping out to a 4-0 start, the Buccos have come back to earth in the last two weeks, dropping two of their last three games. They will look to right the ship this weekend against Matt Ortiz and the Indians, who are currently in possession of the best record in the 'AA' division.
Most pundits expect the Pirates to make another deep playoff run this season, and seeing as the squad has won three-straight 'AA' division championships, it's east to understand why. But Sunday's matchup could be their best early-season test yet and could potentially be a preview of a semifinal or championship round showdown.
Too Hot (4-4) vs. New York Express (3-3) - Sunday, May 5 @GW HS
With so many teams bunched up around the .500 mark, Sunday's matchup between the Express and Too Hot could help one team begin to gain a little separation from the pack, making this a particularly intriguing May double header. But beyond the implications in the standings, this tilt should certainly be a contrast in styles.
With 75 strikeouts in eight games, the Too Hot pitching staff specializes in making hitters swing and miss. But the Express havetraditionally excelled at putting the ball in play and not falling victim to strikeouts. Too Hot has played solid defense thus far, but Dan Trotta's managerial style tends to put pressure on opposing fielders, making these games a must-see affair.
