Keene, NH- The Keene State College Owls Club Hockey Team picked up its first and second wins of the young season this weekend, defeating Providence College on Saturday and Northeastern University on Sunday.
On Saturday, KSC and PC played a scoreless 1st period before the Owls dominated the 2nd period but were held scoreless and surrendered goals late in the final minute just five seconds apart to trail 2-0 headed into the thrid period. Keene State came alive in the third period, scoring four goals in less than ten minutes to pick up the 1st win of the season. CArlin Testa was solid in goal for Keene State; Owls goal scorers were Jake Clark, Drew MErrick, Aaron Harmon and Chris Bertone.
On Sunday, Phil Sweeney's hat trick led the way for Keene State which again relied on thrid period heroics to secure the win. Sweeney opend the game's scoring in the first period. A late breakaway goal by Kyle Carignan gave Keene State a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. A pair of 2nd period goals for Northeastern left the Owls again trailing after two periods. Sweeney scored a pair of goals mid-way through the final period and Mario Serra added some late insurance for Keene.
Keene State (2-1) will host Franklin Pierce University's NCAA team in a scrimmage on Wednesday before returning to ACHA action on Friday & Saturday at RPI & Marist.
