TEMPE- The offensive power of the No. 16 Arizona State club hockey team hammered away goal
after goal as they took down in-state rival No. 15 University of Arizona 6-1 to claim their second win of
the series.
The Sun Devils tallied up 48 shots on goal compared to the Wildcats 28. Jordan Gluck started in net
for the Sun Devils and was a wall only allowing one goal in the contest. Gluck also saved two penalty
shots firing up his team and not giving the Wildcats anything.
“I told the ref as soon as he called the second one ‘I couldn’t believe it. That’s definitely the first time
that’s happened to me,” Gluck said. “Luckily, every Thursday we do a shootout in practice so I get my
work in there and I was ready to go.”
At the end of the first period, no goals were scored for either team, but the penalties were abundant.
Tempers did not simmer from their previous meeting as five penalties were called in the first. One of
those being the first penalty shot Gluck faced.
“It’s tough but those are the things you want those are the things you dream about as a kid, facing
penalty shots in big games,” Guck said. “You’ve got to want those moments.” Those big moments
were revealed in the second period from the Sun Devil forwards.
Three goals were scored in the second period. Senior captain Ryan Ostertag added to his team
leading goals stat by scoring the first one early. Freshman center Andrew Aziz collected his first goal
of the season on a tape-to- tape pass from Austin Snedden. Snedden also picked up his first assist of
the season on the Aziz goal.
“That was all Snedden right there,” Aziz said regarding his goal. “I just drove the net and he gave me
a beautiful pass.”
Senior defenseman Preston Ames scored the third goal in the second period by sniping the corner
pocket.
Head coach Josh Brown was proud of his team for the dominate 6-1 victory. The main focus for the
team was sticking to the same game plan as last night. This time around, the execution was delivered.
“I’m much happier tonight and not only because of the score,” Brown said. “We stuck to our process.
We stuck to everything that we’ve been working towards in practice, good habits, good concepts and
got the good result there in the end.”
In the third period, senior right wing Michael Cummings flew two pucks into the back of the net and
fellow left wing Austin Ehrlich scored to give the Sun Devils the final 6-1 victory.
Next week, the Sun Devils take a long three-day road trip to the Midwest to face off against the
University of Arkansas and then a two-game series against Missouri State University.
“We supported the puck well tonight,” Brown said. “I think that was the difference. Last night there
was a lot of individual effort out there where tonight, we played a team game.”
