The 2014-2015 Goulbourn Hornets Major Midget Boys Team’s basketball season ended on a high note as the team became the Ontario Provincial Champions on Sunday, May 31st. One week after capturing the EOBA City Championship title, lightning struck twice as the team travelled to Kingston to participate in the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) Provincial Championships.

The Hornets once again finished strong by sweeping their opponents and finishing with the gold medal, the Ontario Basketball Championship banner and the game ball. A late Friday night game starting at 9:00pm was a sign of things to come. Holding off a late push from the Wellington Celtics, the Hornets were able to hang on to a 66-43 victory. 

Saturday’s schedule had us pitted against the mighty MUMBA (Markham Unionville Minor Basketball Association) at noon and once again we staved off a late push to hang on to a 64-54 victory. A 6:00pm game against the North Toronto Huskies proved to be our toughest opponent. Thanks to the defense-first coaching style of Coach Arnel Obas, Coach Jeff Bennett and Coach Andrew Anderson, plus the urgency of our players to want a chance to play for gold, we went on to win 53-47.

This booked our ticket to a 1:30 p.m. Sunday match against the Gladiator Athletics and a chance to end our season with a gold medal and the OBA Championship! The game started pretty close as each team tried to get a feel for the other. The Gladiators seemed to have a hard time getting their shots to drop for points which created a lot of chances for the Hornets to capitalize on. Once we had the lead we never let it go and finished with a surprising 73-41 victory     

This victory capped off a run of 8 wins and 0 losses in our final tournament play to end the Goulbourn Hornets 2014-2015 season. Each and every member of this team played their best and played for each other. This was a team of amazing boys guided by amazing coaches to achieve the ultimate goal...the best in the city AND the best in the Province!
