Wilderness rally to defeat Lakers
FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Wisconsin Wilderness bounced back from a one goal deficit to defeat the Fort Frances Lakers 3-1 Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.
The SIJHL’s leading point producer in Jordan Larson of Fort Frances would set-up Adam Wensley for the game’s opening goal 7:30 into the contest as he netted his ninth goal of the season beating Wisconsin goalkeeper Tanner Milliron.
The score would stay that way until the later stages of the middle frame when Anthony Calabrese connected on the power play at 16:25.
Moving on to the third period Andrew Anderson would notch the eventual game-winner with 8:04 to go in regulation as his fifth of the campaign eluded Lakers’ goaltender Tyler Ampe.
Fort Frances would pull Ampe in the late going in an effort to get the equalizer, but Mike Dietrich would ice it with an empty netter in the final minute.
Shots on goal favoured the Wilderness 38-20 with Milliron picking up the win and Ampe suffering the loss.
With the win, Wisconsin moved to within two points of the Lakers in the race for top spot in the SIJHL standings while also holding three games in hand.
SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as Thunder Bay hosts Duluth at the Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
