The Occupy Wall Street Movement has swept across the United States and the rest of the world since mid-September. Each new addition of the movement has taken on a new name for its geographical significance, such as, “Occupy Oakland” or “Occupy Boston.” The New York Giants have also taken part of this movement. Well, not exactly. The Giants movement has nothing to do with economics, politics, or ideologies. Their movement is called “Occupy the Backfield.” It has one thing in mind: Sacking the Quarterback.
The Giants are tied with the Vikings—who haven’t had their bye yet—and the Redskins for the most sacks in the NFL with 21. Leading the way for big blue is young phenom Jason Pierre-Paul who has 7.5 sacks on the season. JPP is also 5th on the team in tackles with 30 total tackles thus far. However, It hasn’t been a one man show this season. Veteran Osi Umenyiora has 5 sacks on the season despite being limited to 3 games, and 5 other members of the movement have contributed to the league leading total. The Giants ability to rush the passer has certainly helped the team climb to the top of the NFC east with a 4-2 record. The G-Men are 4th in the NFC in takeaways with 13 in large part because of their tremendous pass rushing capabilities. Quarterbacks have been making poor decisions and have fumbled the ball consistently due to the Giants heavy pass rush. This “Occupy the Backfield” movement has alleviated some of the pressure on the inexperienced linebackers and has enabled the defensive backfield to elevate their game.
The Giants will be taking on the winless Miami Dolphins this Sunday who have struggled mightily against a heavy pass rush. The Dolphins have given up 22 sacks on the season—only St. Louis and Seattle have given up more (23). On Sunday, the Giants’ defense and their “Occupy the Backfield Movement” will be chomping at the bit to take down Matt Moore to help secure first place in the division and to improve to 5-2 on the season.
