Championship Sunday is Set!
Date: Aug 23, 2019
On Aug. 13, the Double-A postseason officially kicks off when the Railsplitters square off against the Bandits at Taft High School. Below is a look at what to expect from all of our postseason teams:
Play-in Round
(4) Bandits vs. (5) Yonkers Railsplitters (Thursday, 7 p.m. @Taft HS)
The Bandits came on strong late in the season to wrest control of the four-seed from the Railsplitters, and these two teams have seen quite a bit of each other this year. The Railsplitters handed the Bandits their first loss of the season back in April, sweeping the Brooklyn club in the second week of the season. The Bandits got some measure of revenge two weeks ago when they pulled off their own sweep over the Railsplitters.
The Bandits have been winning games this year with a combination of sharp defense and timely hitting. Nobody has been as important to the lineup as 3b Winallan Columbano, who is enjoying a resurgence after missing last year to injury. Columbano is hitting .475 on the year and is second on the team with 14 RBIs.
The Railsplitters have undergone some changes from opening day but are still as dangerous as any team left in the postseason. With a solid top two starters in Kevin Marquez and Travis Kolinoski the 'Splitters have arms that have proven to be capable of shutting down some of the league's top teams. Shortstop Sebastian Colon has also enjoyed an All-Star campaign, hitting .453 at or near the top of the club's lineup.
(3) NYC Mud Hens vs. (6) Nassau Yankees (Friday, 7 p.m. @Taft HS)
After getting off to a dreadful 2-5 start, the Hens bounced back nicely to win 13 of their last 17 games to claim the third seed in the Double-A playoffs. As is often the case, the Hens were led by solid starting pitching, with John Macgregor, Joe Benkert and Chris Liegel leading the way.
The Yankees, too, have relied on good starting performances and feature a deep pitching staff. Eight different pitchers have picked up wins for the Yanks, with hard-throwing lefty Frank Caffey's two wins pacing the squad. Nassau also has one of the most talented shortstops in the league in Steven Varela, who hit .327 with 1 home run this year.
First Round
(1) Bronx Titans vs. (Winner of 4/5) (Saturday, 9 a.m. @Governor's Field)
The Titans went wire-to-wire as the division leaders and it's not hard to see why. With a lineup that features power, speed and no holes, and a pitching staff that has been led by the Herculean efforts of Jonathan Quinones and Ernest Rodriguez, the Titans have lost just twice this season.
Where the Titans have shined, it seems, is in their ability to raise their play to match the competition. George Collazo's ballclub earned a season sweep over the second-place Bronx Orioles, defeating the other top club on opening weekend and again on Aug. 1.
(2) Bronx Orioles vs (Winner of 3/6) (Saturday, 12:30 a.m. @ Governor's Field)
With a lineup every bit as deep and strong as the Titans, the Orioles should be considered heavy favorites against whomever they play in their first-round contest. With Matt Ortiz (.529, 2 HR, 19 RBIs) and Luis Rosario (.523, 6 HR, 23 RBIs) anchoring the middle of the infield, the Orioles have as devastating a double-play combo as you will find in the league. On the mound, 2014 Cy Young winner Anthony Cabrera has turned in another solid season, but the O's have bolstered their ranks with Francisco Sanchez and Carlos Tejeda, who have both been lights out, primarily in relief.
