Brewers anxious for home opener
Date: May 8, 2013

Of all the midseason acquisitions made by the Brewers, player-manager Dave Smith believes that the addition of Terry Oulds to the pitching rotation was the most important.
"It's given us a solid number two starter behind (Dave) Carey," said Smith. "Every time Terry is on the mound we're going to have a great chance to win."
Wednesday night was no exception, as Oulds held the Senior Cardinals to two hits, four walks, and just one earned run.
"If we had played defense in the fourth (inning), it would have been a shutout," quipped Joel Smith, Brewer two-bagger - referencing the inning where the Brewers botched three consecutive double play balls which led to both Amherstburg runs.
It didn't take long for Maple City to get on the scoreboard. Joel Smith led off the game with a sharp single to centre, and after rounding first hard and seeing the centre fielder misplay the ball, tiptoed his way to second.
Dave Smith (LF) moved him to third with a ground out to the right side, and Dave Carey (DH) brought him home with a sac fly to give the Brewers an early 1-0 lead.
With the score 2-1 Cardinals in the top of the fifth, Joel Smith led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and moved to second on a passed ball. Then Carey came up clutch again, with an RBI single that tied the score at two.
In the top of the sixth the Brewers took the lead. Three consecutive singles by Joey Hewak (3B), Matt Knights (SS), and Denny Toth (CF) made the score 3-2. With runners on first and second and one out, Joel Smith grounded sharply to the short stop who attempted to turn the double play. After forcing Toth at second Smith beat the throw to first; meanwhile Knights scored from second on the play with some heads up base running.
Dave Smith and Dave Carey each singled shortly after, with Carey cashing in Joel Smith for the third time on the evening, putting the Brewers up 5-2.
The Brewers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 6-2, and Terry Oulds finished what he started, aided by two nice running catches in left field by Dave Smith in the bottom of the sixth, and a leaping catch on a looping liner by second baseman Joel Smith in the bottom of the seventh that started a 4-3 double play to end the game. Full box score available.
The Brewers are now 19-3 in the Essex County loop with two regular season games remaining... Terry Oulds moves to 3-0 overall on the year...
