Leaving the tying run at third base in the ninth inning the Calgary Vipers (45-26) were defeated 4-3 by the Chico Outlaws (38-39) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 4-0 the Vipers scored two runs in the sixth inning and with two outs in the ninth pushed across one run but left the tying run 90 feet away to end the game. With the loss Calgary’s lead atop the North Division drops to a half game.
Garret Holleran (5-7) took the loss after allowing five walks and four runs in six innings.
Chico opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Jake Rife walked and Brian McFall hit a home run for a 2-0 advantage.
The Outlaws added a run in the fourth as Rife followed by McFall walked, Adam Buchini was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Patrick Terry singled in one for a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth frame Chico made it 4-0 when Rife walked, stole two bases, and scored on a throwing error by Wilver Perez.
Calgary cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as C.J. Ziegler singled, Chad Ehrnsberger walked, Drew Miller reached on an error to load the bases, and Jeff Giacomini reached on an error for a run batted in that ended up scoring two runs.
The Vipers scored in the bottom of the ninth when Giacomini reached, with two outs Perez singled, and Jimmy Rohan knocked in a run with a base hit for a 4-3 final.
