Canadians stifle Commandos comeback to win Fred Page Cup

Put it in the books—the Carleton Place Canadians have won the 2015 Fred Page Cup after defeating the Dieppe Commandos by a score of 3-2.

The win makes the Canadians the first team to win the tournament in two consecutive years. They will now advance to the Royal Bank Cup in Portage la Prairie, taking place from May 9th to May 17th.

The game was deadlocked at two goals apiece until a Canadians powerplay at 14:27 of the third, when Willie Brooks snapped a tricky shot from just inside the point past Commandos goaltender Marc Terriault.

Brooks’ goal thwarted a comeback attempt from the Commandos, who had tied the game after entering the third period trailing 2-0. They outshot the Canadians 13-9 in the final frame, but were unable to complete the upset.

Craig Pefley assisted on all three Canadians goals.

Team captain Stephen Baylis opened the scoring at 14:28 of the first period. Pefley had attempted to centre the puck, but it took a strange bounce in front. Vinny Post then plucked the disc from the air, dropped it, and centred it to Baylis—who rifled it past Terriault.

Bryce VanHorn widened the gap at 15:35 of the second, after a tight powerplay and some solid puck movement between Wesley Bayer and Pefley.

It has been said that a 2-0 is the worst lead in hockey, and with that in mind, the Commandos mounted their comeback in the third period.

Although they came close to taking control over the game, powerplay goals from Ryan Langan and Robbie Graham weren’t enough.

If anybody could have beaten Carleton Place in this tournament, it was Dieppe. With stifling defence and a dangerous powerplay, their skills matched up against Carleton Place well.

The Canadians were just a little bit better.

Guillaume Therien made 30 stops for his third win of the tournament, and his 15th of the postseason (including the Bogart Cup Championship).

The Canadians now get a few days of rest before they begin the RBC in Portage la Prairie, where the competition will be much fiercer.

The team will be much better off after getting into some tight games in this tournament.
