Jose Conseco showed why he hit 462 home runs in his major league career against the Chico Outlaws Wednesday night at Tiger Field, belting a soaring solo shot to left field in his first at bat that is still rolling down the city streets of Redding, California. He also showed why he struck out nearly 2000 times in his 16 Major league seasons, as Jason Stevenson (7-0) sat Conseco down on strikes four times on his way to his seventh victory of the season. Despite the three solo homers Stevenson yielded in his seven innings of work, he was absolutely filthy; fanning thirteen of the 31 batters he faced.
The Yuma Scorpions went to work early with Conseco’s solo blast in the top of the first. JJ Muse joined the party in the bottom half of the second with his own solo homer to dead center to give the Scorpions a 2-0 advantage.
The Outlaws answered in the top half of the fourth, beginning with a single by Danny Gonzalez who had himself a solid ballgame, going 3-5 while nearly homering for the first time this season with a bullet off the left field wall. Gonzalez then scored on a Pat Terry double. Will Wright followed with a double of his own down the line in right field that scored Terry. After an RBI line drive past the diving Arnoldo Ponce by Adam Buschini, a wild pitch by Gilbert De La Vera scored Wright from third to give the Outlaws a 4-2 lead.
The outlaws piled on runs in the seventh with a Jake Rife solo homer off the light pole in center field followed by a Will Wright RBI single that paved the way to a 7-3 Outlaw victory.
