Brewers anxious for home opener
Date: May 8, 2013

A weak warmup session before the game didn't stop Joel Smith from pitching well when it counted. The 22 year old hurler from the University of Waterloo struck out 12 batters, scattered 6 hits, and allowed only 1 earned run over a complete game 9-3 victory against the Wyoming Cowboys.
"Early on it was a battle against my control," Smith said after the game, "but around the fourth inning I found my groove; it was one of those days where all your pitches are working."
Maple City jumped on the Cowboy starter in the second inning, lambasting him for seven runs (all earned); six with two outs.
Brandyn Broadwood (C) had two walks in the inning, Alan Oldershaw (1B) hit an RBI single, and Ryan Cattrysse (3B) had a two run single to power the offense. In total, the Brewers hit six singles and walked three times in the inning.
After that it was all Smith, as he completely shut down the Cowboy offense. Each time the Cowboys would try to mount a rally, Smith would come up with a strikeout.
"It seemed like every batter was trying to work the count. I don't know why they would do that, knowing that I pound the zone."
After the Cowboys scored one in the bottom of the third, Cattrysse struck again in the top of the fourth. Dave Smith (SS) doubled to the left centre gap to lead off the inning, and one batter later Cattrysse singled home Smith, putting the Brewers back ahead by seven, 8-1.
Each team would score a single run in the sixth, the Brewers' coming on an Alan Oldershaw bases loaded infield single, and the Cowboys would add a meaningless run in the seventh; the final score being 9-3 for Maple City. Full box score available.
The Brewers return home for a weekend homestand, with games Friday night and Sunday afternoon. They play the Petrolia Raiders at 7:05pm Friday night, and the Dresden Juniors on Sunday, first pitch at 2:35pm.
