Brewers Beat Pirates in Grudge Match

Two mid-season signings are paying dividends for the Brewers, as was evidenced on Sunday afternoon at Fergie Jenkins Field in a 3-2 win over Port Lambton.

Terry Oulds, who debuted on June 29th, went the distance for the Brewers, allowing two runs on five hits, and striking out six in the process. The only two runs allowed came after a series of sloppy defensive plays that were not officially errors, but were plays that should have been made.

David Corrente was behind the dish for the second straight game in his return to baseball after a couple of years away. In addition to excellent defense, he smacked a single to left that ate up the left fielder, allowing Corrente to waltz to second base on the play. He would score on a Denny Toth (CF) double.

The Brewers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Jason Shaw (1B) walked, followed by a sharp single to left off the bat of Joel Smith (2B). Matt Knights (SS) hit a fielder's choice, as Smith was retired 4-6, putting runners at the corners with one out.

With Ryan Cattrysse (RF) at the plate, Knights broke for second as the pitcher threw a pickoff to first. As he was caught in a rundown, Shaw quietly made his way down the third baseline and made a nifty head first slide under the throw from the short stop who had tagged Knights out prior to the throw, putting the Brewers ahead 1-0.

In the fourth inning the Brewers came back for more. Corrente scored on Toth's double, then with two outs Shaw came up with a clutch RBI single to make the score 3-0.

Terry Oulds, meanwhile, was making short work of the Pirates. Through five innings he was working only one batter over the minimum, allowing only a single and a walk.

The sixth inning saw the Pirates push a couple of runs across the plate. With one out and runners on the corners, a slow roller to short that should have been a double play turned into only one out (at second) and a wild throw to first, allowing a run to score.

After that, consecutive singles would plate another run, making the score 3-2, but Oulds battled back and struck out the seventh batter of inning halting the rally. A clean seventh inning would make that the final score in favour of the Brewers. Full box score available.

Maple City travels to Sarnia on Tuesday to battle the Wyoming Cowboys. Their season series is 1-1 after a split in Chatham a few weeks back. The Brewers return home Friday to play Petrolia, first pitch is 7:05 pm at Fergie Jenkins Field.
