Brewers anxious for home opener
Date: May 8, 2013

The Maple City Brewers continued their dominance of the Windsor Titans on Friday, at Fergie Jenkins Field, with a convincing 7-0 victory. The win moved the Brewers to 3-0 on the season against Windsor and propelled them to 12-3 in the Essex League.
The highlight of the game was David Corrente (C) juicing a ball to left field which cleared the fence for a home run in his first game as a Brewer. Corrente, who played in the Toronto Blue Jay farm system, also provided stellar defense behind the plate.
On the mound, Dave Carey pitching through a wrist injury showed why he is a dominant force in both leagues. Carey held Windsor to 2 hits over 6 innings of work, while striking out 6, lowering his season ERA to 1.06.
The Brewer bats jumped out to an early lead, playing as the away team. Joel Smith (2B) beat out a ground ball up the middle, and scored on a Matt Knights (SS) double to left field to open the scoring.
After Knights advanced to third, Brandyn Broadwood (DH) knocked a double to left centre making the score 2-0, in favour of the Brewers.
In the fourth, the Brewers mounted a rally with one out. Mike Verfaillie (1B) walked, and moved to second on an Alan Oldershaw (LF) single. Smith walked to load the bases, then Knights hit a long fly ball to centre that was caught at the warning track, plating Verfaillie and giving Maple City a 3-0 lead.
The top of the sixth inning started with a Dave Smith (RF) single, and then a nifty delayed steal of second which caught the Windsor middle infielders flat-footed. After the next 2 batters were retired, Joel Smith lined a 2-2 pitch over the short stop for an RBI single.
With the score 4-0, the Brewers padded their lead again in the seventh. David Corrente opened the inning off with a bomb to left. Denny Toth (CF) followed with a sharp single and Dave Smith walked. After a strikeout, Brock Henderson (LF) walked to load the bases, and Joel Smith came up clutch again with a 2 run single up the middle, increasing the lead to 7-0.
Leading the Brewers offensively were Joel Smith going 3-3 with 2 walks, and 3 RBI; Brandyn Broadwood, who was 2-3 with a double, triple and an RBI; and Matt Knights who was 1-3 with a double, 2 RBI and a walk.
That was all the runs the Brewers would get, and Jason Shaw came on to pitch the seventh in relief of Carey, holding the Titans off the scoreboard. Full box score available.
The Brewers play at home on Sunday against the Port Lambton Pirates, first pitch is 3 pm. The Brewers look to rebound from last Sunday's 11-2 loss at Port Lambton.
