White Gets Win in Game 2; Outlaws Split Doubleheader

Date:  Source: NABL: Chico Outlaws

The Maui Na koa Ikaika took down the Chico Outlaws in a lopsided victory 15-4 during game one of the scheduled double header at Bihler Field in Orland, CA.

In Rusty Jones’ (4-1) lone start of the year, he allowed three runs in 4.2 innings on the way to his fourth win of the season. He departed with two outs in the fifth with a 9-2 lead over the Outlaws. The former Outlaw Rusty Jones was also dominant at the plate, going 2-3 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs

Dave Whigham (0-1) struggled in his first start as an Outlaw, allowing ten earned on twelve hits in four innings pitched on his way to the loss.

Most of the damage came in the top of the second, beginning with a single by Del Real that took a bad bounce off the face of third baseman Adam Buschini. Pitcher Rusty Jones then helped his own cause by belting a two run blast 350ft over the left field wall to take a 3-1 advantage. After a walk and a dribbling single down the third base line by Pat Rose, a throwing error by Adam Buschini loaded the bases for Stephen Pearson. Pearson opened up the game with a sharp single up the middle that scored two, giving Maui a 5-1 lead. With Justin Jacobs up to the plate, Maui wasn’t done as Jacobs creamed a three run homer over the head of Kurt Steinhauer in left field.

With an electric crowd in attendance at Bihler field to see local favorite Evan White get the start in game two of the double header, the Outlaws eked out the victory 3-2 against Maui.

Evan White (1-0) looked solid in 4.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on his way to his first victory of the season. White, whom Manager Mike Marshall acquired in early July has been a great addition to the Outlaw pitching rotation. In his three starts thus far, White has pitched 13.1 innings and has recorded eleven strike outs while giving up only two earned runs.

Maui started off fast in the top of the first, loading the bases after three straight singles. Mochizuki scored after a Stephen pearson sacrifice fly to give Maui a 1-0 lead, but Evan White was able to get out of trouble and escaped the inning with mininmal damage.

The Outlaws answered in the bottom half of the first beginning with a walk to Jay Pecci. Adam Buschini then stepped up to the plate and hit a sharp double down the line to move Pecci to third. A wild pitch by Kris Honel brought Pecci home to tie the game at one a piece.

After a single by Buschini in the bottom of the third, Mcfall hit a mammoth two run blast to deep left center to give the Outlaws a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish. In ten total at bats thus far in the series, Mcfall has been dominant, going 5-10 with three home runs and six RBIs.

Jake Muyco (1-0) entered the game in the seventh and didn’t allow a run while notching his fourth save in as many chances. Muyco has embraced his role as the closer for the Outlaws since being acquired July 8th. Thus far in six appearances he has only allowed one earned and has fanned 9 batters in only eight innings pitched.

Former Outlaw Kris Honel (0-1) got the start for Maui, going five innings while giving up three earned on his way to the loss. Honel was one of the handful of former players Garry Templeton whom managed the Outlaws last season, brought along with him to Maui.
