Late Innings Define Maui Trip

Date:  Source: NABL: Yuma Scorpions

Maui, Hawaii -- The Yuma Scorpions (16-29) have once again played a meaningful ninth inning.  They defeated the Maui Na Koa Ikaika (20-25) on Friday night on a wild pitch by Clayton Uyechi (4-1).  The run came on a 0-0 count with Jesse Alfonso at the plate.  Jonathon Jaspe took advantage of the sitaution and scored the winning run with 2-outs.

Andrew Romo was the starting pitcher, but received a no decision on the night.  He struck out 6 batters, but gave up 6 runs, all earned.  Romo has been a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde as he performs as an all-star when the Scorpions are at home and seems to struggle as of late when on the road.  He lasted only 3 2/3 innings, so 6 K's is an outstanding percentage of outs.  He has 60 strikeouts with only 48 2/3 innings pitched on the season.  Romo is sporting a 2.05 ERA at home this season with a 2-2 record.  On the road, Romo has a 7.25 ERA and is 0-2; he has started 4-games at home and 4-games on the road.  A usual starter, Jon Huizinga (2-4) came into the game and picked up the win.  He surrendered only 2-hits in 2-innings of play.

The Scorpions stuggled, if you wish to call it that, at the plate.  They left 11 runners on base, but still notched 7-runs.  The Scorpions collected 3-doubles on the night.  JJ Muse picked up his 19th double on the season, tied for 3rd in the league.  Beau Riportella made his way to the leadoff spot now hitting .370 and has an on-base-percentage of .420.  Riportella has the best batting average on the road for the Scorpions this season.  His average is 96-points higher than the next closest positional player on the road.

After a few regular starters took the night off on Friday, look for the Scorpions to reload and take on Maui on Saturday night.  The game time will be 6:35pm (9:35pm AZ).
