Semifinals set as Motor City, Soo, Detroit sweep

Three teams advanced to the MWJHL Veteran’s Memorial Cup semifinals with first-round series sweeps Saturday night.

The Motor City Monarchs, Soo Firehawks and Detroit Fighting Irish join the Traverse City Hounds as the final four teams vying for the Veteran’s Memorial Cup.

 

Joe Gibbs had two goals and an assist to lead the Monarchs past the Michigan Ice Dogs 6-3 at Fraser Hockeyland.

Tory Shand added two goals and Anthony Wojciechowski tallied a goal and two assists for Motor City.

Zach Kopinski also scored, while Trevor Hillman contributed three assists and Adam Jonak and Derrick Treppa chipped in two assists apiece.

Monarchs’ goaltender Stephan Demmers compiled a 26-save effort for the win.

For the Ice Dogs, Marc Rotondo scored once and added an assist and Johannes DeJongh and Dallas Fritz recorded the other markers.

Michigan goalie Chris Boyd finished with 48 saves.

The Monarchs will now host the Fighting Irish next weekend for Game 1 at Jack Adams Arena and then Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) at Fraser Hockeyland.

 

At the Nelson Center, the visiting Firehawks swept the Decatur Blaze with a 5-3 win.

Matt MacLaren (pictured) popped a pair of goals and Daniel Bachynsky and Zach Eitrem posted a goal and an assist each.

Nick Gordon also scored for the Soo and Cody Call made 28 saves between the pipes.

Brandon Adler went for a goal and an assist for the Blaze, while Luka Znidarsic and Curtis Schlereth added single goals.

Blaze goaltender Matt Hatcher stopped 47 shots in the loss.

The Firehawks move on to play the top-seeded Hounds in the semifinals next weekend at Centre ICE.

 

Finishing out the night at the Brownstown Sports Center, Kory Dombrowski turned aside all 26 shots he faced to lead the Fighting Irish to a 3-0 win over the Alpena Flyers.

Christian Ramage, Eric Long and Ken Winter supplied the offense for Detroit.

Alpena goalie Hunter Myers kicked out 35 shots in the Flyers’ net.

Detroit now travels to play the Monarchs at Fraser Hockeyland in the semifinals.
