Firehawks fall in Sunday shootout in Decatur

DECATUR, Ill. - The Decatur Blaze defeated the Soo Firehawks 6-5 in a thrilling shootout Sunday afternoon at the Decatur Civic Center.

Ty Gehrken scored two goals for the Blaze, while Luka Znidarsic posted a goal and two assists and Justus Kree and Micah Young each had a goal and an assist as the Blaze took two of three on the weekend.

Paul Stomper stopped 46 shots in goal for Decatur.

For the Firehawks, Zach Eitrem went for a goal and two assists and Mario Taranto and Dustin Brown (pictured) each registered a goal and a helper.

Zach Lee and Quinton Myotte added single goals, with Myotte’s at 13:10 of the third period tying the game at 5-all.

Matt Majic and Anthony Laaksonen collected two assists apiece and goaltender Michael Pelland made 19 saves.

Decatur finishes the regular season in third place with a 29-14-2-1 record and will host a first-round playoff series against either the Soo or Alpena Flyers.

The Firehawks are 17-24-1-3 and have just one more game in the regular season – next Saturday at home against Alpena at 7 p.m.
