Maple City Drops Second Straight To End Road Trip

Date:  Source: Maple City Brewers

Maple City battled back from a 3-0 deficit to lead 4-3 late in the contest, but that lead would be short-lived as the Woodslee Orioles scored twice in the fifth, and again in the sixth to win 6-4. The prevailing theme in this ball game was defense as both sides made five errors, resulting in seven of the ten runs being unearned.

Denny Toth took the mound for the Brewers in his first start of the season, going four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and no walks. Toth looked comfortable on the mound and had good velocity on his fastball and left the game leading 4-3.

The home side got on the board first, plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning. A single, double, and a two run single would score the first two runs. The final run of the inning would come in on a controversial call at the plate, where it appeared that the runner sliding into home never touched home plate on a nice block of the plate by Mike Verfaillie (C).

The Brewers, as they are wont to do, came back in the top of the fifth with a rally of their own. Joe Wright (RF) reached on an error, stole second, and came to third on another error. Joel Smith (2B) worked his way to a 3-2 count, and on the eight pitch of the at-bat, lined a single up the middle to get the Brewers on the board. Dave Smith (LF) and Joey Hewak (SS) followed with back-to-back singles, with Joel Smith scoring on the latter.

Toth then hit a sharp ground ball to the hole at short stop, but the Woodslee shortstop made a magical play to get Toth at first base. Jason Shaw (1B) was issued an intentional walk which brought up Jarrod Lucier (3B) who promptly hit a ball through the legs of the short stop plating two more Brewer runs.

Matt Rylett took over pitching duties in the bottom of the fifth and quickly retired the first two hitters. However, the inning was kept alive after an infield error, and the Orioles capitalized with a walk, hit by pitch, and single to plate two runs, and retake the lead 5-4.

Woodslee added an insurance run in the sixth inning and Maple City couldn't rally for a second time and 6-4 was the final. Joel Smith led the Brewer offence with three singles. He led off the game with a perfectly placed drag bunt that landed in the middle of the second baseman, first baseman, pitcher triangle. Then in the fifth drove in the Brewer's first run with a line drive single, and in the sixth inning perfectly executed a fake bunt, pull-back slap over top of the third baseman. Dave Smith also had a fine day at the plate; a pair of singles, walk, RBI, and a run scored. Full box score available.

Maple City now heads home for a four game weekend homestand. They welcome the Windsor Titans to Fergie Jenkins Field on Friday evening. Jason Shaw (3-0) is on the mound for the Brewers, with first pitch coming at 7 pm.
