Brewers anxious for home opener
Date: May 8, 2013

After a month of playing on the road, the Maple City Brewers had to wait just a little bit longer to get on their home diamond. Their Friday night contest against Dresden was delayed almost 40 minutes because one of the umpires failed to show up.
In the end, it was just a delay of the inevitable as the Brewers jumped out to a 8-0 lead after three innings and cruised to a 9-1 victory in front of an appreciative home crowd. The Brewers were led by Joey Hewak (3B) with three hits, including a harshly scored triple that could have gone for an inside-the-park home run. Hewak roped a 3-1 pitch into the left-centre gap that went all the way to the wall. The left fielder overthrew the cut-off man and allowed Hewak to waltz home on the play. Whether or not he would have scored had the cut-off man been hit is up for debate. Mike Verfaillie (1B) also had a day with two infield singles and two RBI. Full box score available.
Making his Western Counties season debut, Jason Shaw threw seven strong innings for the Brewers, allowing 3 hits, no walks, and just 1 run - picking up his team leading third win of 2011. The Brewers improved to 9-1 overall, and 3-0 in the Western Counties Loop. The Brewers double header on Sunday has been switched to a single game against the Courtright Cardinals. Start time is 1 pm at Fergie Jenkins Field.
