During a recent interview with Soo writer Coach Dan Vasquez was asked about his opinion on where the team is and its progress in the MWJHL season. Confidently the coach explained to Russon that he was not overly concerned because Irish hockey emphasizes skill and does not rely on defensive systems or traps. "We made our mind up a long time ago that we would not sacrafice skill development for and extra W in the win loss column". We continue to out puck control our opponents every night as well as out shoot them most nights 2-1. Unfortunately the sacrafice has been on the defensive side of the puck. Not one to use excuses or to gloat when talking about his teams accomplishments or failures Vasquez pointed out during the interview that the team basically had to introduce an entire new defensive corp and goaltending corp to the teams system. For the first time in 8 years the Irish were in position that they didn't have returning goaltender or at least 50% of the defensive corp didn't return the team entered the season with an entire new defensive corp and three new goaltenders. "We consider this to be a good thing as 4 of our defenceman whom still had a year of eligibility were recruited to play college as well as our goaltending tandem that tells us that what we preach and what we do is the right thing stated Vasquez" Early seasons losses to the Monarch's and Ice Dogs would have many coach's scratching their heads , However Vasquez looks at this as a very positive thing for Michigan Hockey. "When we started this league we wanted to build it on a foundation of building crosstown and rivalry's within our own regions and we are accomplishing that . It would be my goal that every game in our league was a battle, no one is blowing anyone out like in our first couple years and anyone can beat anybody on any given night. Both coaches Kyle Lang and Jason McCrimmon are the future of the game and are the faces of the future of this game in Michigan, I want to see these guys do well and they are. They are putting myself and my staff to task but isn't that what this games is all about at the end of the day it's not about wins and losses it is about how well can we promote, develop and get these kids to school". Coach Vasquez beams when he talks about his current team "when you have players like James Smith , Ken Winter, Rob Danyo, and Christian Ramage whom have been committed to your program and continue to go out and perform everynight you know your doing something right". The Irish go into the weekend with a two game set at home first tonight against the Michigan Ice Dogs and then Tomorrow afternoon against the Monarch's. Newly acquired players Sean Eastman and Jake Gorzlowski will be in uniform this week for the Irish
