Sydney Sabres uses early goal to top Melbourne Whalers, 3-1

Sydney Sabres took the lead against Melbourne Whalers in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-1 victory.

Saxon Air provided Sydney Sabres with the game-winning tally when he scored 10:54 into the first period. Luke Shafren provided the assist.

Air had a great game for Sydney Sabres, netting two goals.

With 29 shots on target during the contest, Sydney Sabres exceeded the 2.0 shots it averages per game this year. Sydney Sabres was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 51 penalty minutes.

Sydney Sabres also got points from Ellese Carini, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Sydney Sabres received assists from Damien Sables and Joshua Hansen, who contributed one each.

Melbourne Whalers allowed the opposing goaltender to relax, finishing with only 14 shots on goal to force 13 saves. Still, the total topped Melbourne Whalers' average of 1.2 per game this year. Melbourne Whalers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Sydney Sabres to score on any of its seven power plays.

Melbourne Whalers was led by Nickolaos French, who scored the team's only goal. French scored on the power play 5:11 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Sydney Sabres. Melbourne Whalers earned a power play opportunity when Bryan Costa was put in the box for tripping.

Sydney Sabres' Tyrone Mendoza-Kehlet stopped 13 shots out of the 14 that he faced. Baylea Powell recorded 26 saves for Melbourne Whalers. Melbourne Whalers incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
