WhiteWings Win 2014 United League Baseball Championship

Date:  Source: United League Baseball

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings are the 2014 United League Baseball champions.  They defeated the Fort Worth Cats tonight by a final score of 6-4 from Harlingen Field.  They swept the best-of-five series, winning the first two championship series games in Fort Worth and tonight's game in Harlingen.

This is the first league title for the WhiteWings organization since the team won the Texas-Louisiana League title in 2000.  Here is a list of all professional independent baseball league champions since 1993.

Here is the box score from tonight's game:  August 19 2014 United League Baseball Championship Box Score

Garcia earned the victory tonight for the WhiteWings, pitching six innings and striking out six.  Leitten, Peacock and Minnich each pitched one scoreless inning of relief, with Minnich earning his 23rd save for 2014 (regular season and post-season combined total).  Krobetzky went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.  Bernal scored two runs, and both Merjano and Wilson had one RBI on the evening.  Gomez went 1-for-3 and had 2 RBI for the Cats, and had his deep fly ball caught on a tremendous play in the outfield to prevent a possible game-tying hit for the final out.

Congratulations to the WhiteWings players, manager Chris Patterson, the WhiteWings coaching staff and the WhiteWings front office on a successful 2014 season.
