Led by Head Coach Tim Kitagawa, the Atlanta Knights Bantam A travel team finished up a very successful 2013-14 hockey season. After posting a first-place record of 17-2-1 in SYTHL league games, the Knights advanced to the SYTHL playoffs held in early March. With a 2-1 record in pool play, the Atlanta Knights faced the Huntsville Chargers in the championship game. The Knights used relentless defense and excellent goaltending to protect their early lead before eventually winning 4-2. The rest of the season consisted of three tournament wins in Tampa Bay, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Columbus, OH. In addition, the Knights went “old school” and played an outdoor winter classic game against the Pittsburgh Artic Fox Bantam A team. For many of the Knights players, it was their first experience playing outdoor hockey and it was arguably the highlight of the season.
Throughout the season, the team focused on improvement of their hockey skills, knowledge, and teamwork. Reflecting the MIC’s continuing emphasis on total player development, schoolwork was also emphasized with required study sessions during travel weekends. Community service was encouraged with the players helping special needs kids learn to skate and play hockey. This team would not have been as successful if it were not for the great coaches, families and teammates. GO KNIGHTS!!
