In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Benilde-St. Margarets Red Knights escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Hopkins Royals.
Benilde-St. Margarets gained the winning advantage on a goal by Mark Kaske 11:41 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.
The win gave the Red Knights a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.
Benilde-St. Margarets was led by Kaske, who tallied one goal.
Hopkins was unable to stop the Red Knights from sending pucks towards the net, and Benilde-St. Margarets eventually piled up 41 shots on goal.
Benilde-St. Margarets additionally got points from Spencer Naas, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Carter Roo, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Chase Jungels, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Benilde-St. Margarets came via Johnny Austin, Ben Newhouse, Jacob Holmers, and Auggie Moore, who each chipped in one.
The Royals relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Jim Copouls, Ryan Kimbrel and Matt Hines took 14 of the team's 27 shots.
Hopkins was helped by Sweeney, who tallied one goal. Sweeney scored on the power play 10:59 into the third period to make the score 2-2. A tripping penalty on Naas had put the Royals on the power play. Daniel Waggoner assisted on the tally. In addition, Hopkins received assists from Joshua Laven, who had one.
Jalen Long recorded 25 saves for the Red Knights. Benilde-St. Margarets incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Josh Kuehmichel made 37 saves for Hopkins on 40 shots. The Royals incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
