Russia hangs on, beats Lake Tahoe 2-1

Russia beat the Lake Tahoe Blue, 2-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Russia took over the lead for good with a goal by Grigory Zheldakov at 12 seconds in the first period. Danil Apalkov assisted on the tally.

Russia was efficient when it shot the puck, scoring its goals on only two shots.

Russia was sparked by Zheldakov, who had one goal and one assist.

Russia managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Russia ended up below its season average of 3.0 penalty minutes per game. Russia's offense revolved around and Zheldakov, who put and one shot on net. Russia's defensemen bolstered Russia's offensive attack, as they bombarded Mark Visentin with one shot.

Vladislav Kartaev also scored for Russia. In addition, Russia received assists from Pavel Kulikov, who had one.

Lake Tahoe allowed the opposing netminder to relax, ripping only two shots on goal to force one save. The shot total fell below the Blue's season average of 5.0 shots per game. Lake Tahoe's offense revolved around and Sam Carrick, who put and one shot on net.

The Blue were led by Freddie Hamilton, who scored the team's only goal. Hamilton scored 12 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Lake Tahoe. Carrick picked up the assist.

Russia registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities. Lake Tahoe avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored zero goals off of one power plays.
