Lake Tahoe beats Russia 2-1 after comeback scare

Russia tried to dig itself out of a two-goal hole, but the Lake Tahoe Blue held on for a 2-1 victory.

Lake Tahoe made the score 2-0 on a goal by Ryan Sproul at 4:07 in the first period, and Russia got as close as 2-1 when Mikhail Naumenko scored zero seconds into the third period.

Russia's Sergey Kostenko could not handle what the Blue threw at him, as Lake Tahoe netted its goals off of three.

The Blue got most of their shots through Sproul, Daniel Catenacci and Jamie Oleksiak, who totaled three pucks on net between them. Lake Tahoe's defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring two goals and taking two shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Lake Tahoe were Freddie Hamilton, who had one.

Russia allowed the opposing goalie to relax, taking only two shots on goal to force one save. The shot total fell below Russia's season average of 8.4 shots per game. Russia managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Russia finished below its season average of 4.0 penalty minutes per game. Russia's offense revolved around and Nail Yakupov, who put and one shot on net. Russia's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with one shot between them.

Scott Wedgewood rejected one shot on goal for the Blue. Lake Tahoe ended with no penalties and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Sergey Kostenko made one save for Russia on three shots. Russia registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities.
