GAME RECAP

Valiquette leads Valpellice to shutout victory over Cortina

Cotta Morandini    Sat, Mar 10, 2012

The Valpellice Bulldogs used a sparkling performance by Steve Valiquette to take down Cortina, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Valpellice's 2-0 shutout victory.

Cortina's power play was ineffective against the Bulldogs' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Valpellice's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Cortina power plays. The Bulldogs were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 26 penalty minutes.

Valpellice was led by Robert Sirianni, who finished with one goal and one assist. Sirianni scored 14:40 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Valpellice. Taggart Desmet provided the assist. Valpellice also got a goal from Lou Dickenson as well. More assists for Valpellice came via Trevor Johnson, who had two.

Cortina stifled the Bulldogs' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Cortina did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Cortina puts an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. Cortina struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 24 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

Valiquette recorded 36 saves for Valpellice. Cortina's Jean Philippe Levasseur stopped 35 shots out of the 37 that he faced.
