HC Gherdeina survives HC Neumarkt Egna comeback, wins 6-4

The HC Gherdeina Furie came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the HC Neumarkt Egna Wild Goose, but did just enough to escape with a 6-4 victory.

HC Gherdeina led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Furie's James Schaafsma's scored at 16:53 in the second period to put HC Gherdeina up 5-2.

Schaafsma and Benjamin Kostner provided the spark for the Furie, combining for four goals and two assists. Schaafsma tallied two goals and one assist and Kostner also notched two goals and one assist.

HC Gherdeina racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and two majors for 66 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 32.0 minutes per game the Furie had been spending in the box.

Derek Eastman also scored for HC Gherdeina. Other players who recorded assists for HC Gherdeina were Julian Mascarin, who had three, Mikeol Moroder and Joel Brugnoli, who contributed one a piece, and Patrick Wallenberg and Gabriel Lang, who each chipped in two.

HC Neumarkt Egna was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 68 minutes in penalty time. The Wild Goose surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

HC Neumarkt Egna was helped by Turo Virta, who finished with two goals. Virta scored the first of his two goals at 2:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 HC Neumarkt Egna. Michele Ciresa picked up the assist. Virta's next tally made the score 4-2 HC Gherdeina with 5:55 left in the second period. Flavio Faggioni provided the assist. HC Neumarkt Egna also got a goal from Matteo Peiti as well. More assists for HC Neumarkt Egna came via Michael Sullmann and Steve Pellettier, who contributed one a piece.

Florian Grossgasteiger recorded 34 saves for HC Gherdeina. The Furie registered three goals on 10 power play opportunities. For HC Gherdeina, Davide Caprioli and Benjamin Saurer were ejected from the contest. The Wild Goose's starting goalie, Hannes Pichler, made 23 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Martin Rizzi, who stopped 14 shots. HC Neumarkt Egna registered three goals on 10 power play opportunities. The Wild Goose ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alexander Sullmann was ejected from the game.
