Wichita vanquishes Arizona in shootout, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Chad Painchaud netted the deciding goal for the Wichita Thunder in the shootout as Thunder prevailed over the Arizona Sundogs, 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams.

Wichita saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Thunder made the score 3-1 on a power play goal by Matt Robinson at 3:23 in the third period. Arizona evened things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Kevin Baker at 17:05 in the third period.

Wichita forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Thunder had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. The 41 shots that Wichita put on net surpassed the Thunder's average of 27.2 shots per game this season.

Neil Trimm also scored for Wichita. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita were RG Flath, Matt Summers, and Kevin Young, who each chipped in one.

The Sundogs' offense rang up 31 shots on Wichita's net.

Arizona was helped by Chad Nehring, who tallied one goal. Nehring scored on the power play 3:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Arizona. The Sundogs had gotten the advantage when the Thunder's Andrew Martens was sent off for slashing. Jason Morgan assisted on the tally. Arizona also got a goal from Sebastien Geoffrion as well. More assists for Arizona came via Cody Purves, who had two and Jeff Kyrzakos and Derek LeBlanc, who contributed one a piece.

Torrie Jung recorded 28 saves for Wichita. The Thunder registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Wichita ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Flath was ejected from the game. Arizona's Adam Russo stopped 37 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Sundogs totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-8 on the power play.
