Huge game by Lowe boosts Wichita over Denver, 9-5

The Wichita Thunder's Ian Lowe had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in his team's 9-5 win over the Denver Cutthroats.

Lowe's tallies came at 8:59 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and on the power play 11:47 into the second to make the score 3-2 Wichita.

Denver fell victim to a deadly Wichita power play, which ripped the Cutthroats for five goals.

The Thunder found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Wichita averages 3.6 goals per game. The Thunder relied heavily on their defensemen to assist their forwards, and the blueliners responded by scoring two goals on 13 shots. The 32 shots that Wichita put on net surpassed the Thunder's average of 25.5 shots per game this season. Wichita's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Thunder finished with 20 penalty minutes.

Wichita additionally got points from RG Flath, who also had two goals and one assist, Matt Summers, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Neil Trimm, who also registered two goals and two assists to lead the team in points, Kevin Young, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Andrew Martens, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Wichita received assists from Jarred Mohr, Travis Wight, and Les Reaney, who each chipped in one and David Inman, Torrie Jung, and Matt Robinson, who contributed two a piece.

The Denver penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. The Cutthroats surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. With 30 shots on target during the contest, Denver exceeded the 25.3 shots it averages per game this year.

The Cutthroats were helped by A.J. Gale, who finished with two goals. Gale scored the first of his two goals at 5:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Denver. Gabe Gauthier assisted on the tally. Gale's next tally made the score 6-4 Wichita with 14:27 left in the third period. Brad Smyth provided the assist. Denver also got points from Luke Fulghum, who also registered one goal and one assist and Jean-Philipp Chabot, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Joel Chouinard also scored for Denver. More assists for Denver came via Jamie MacQueen, who had one and Troy Schwab, who had two.

Jung rejected 25 shots on goal for Wichita. Kieran Millan recorded 23 saves for Denver. The Cutthroats registered two goals on six power play opportunities.
