GAME RECAP

Arizona uses early goal to top Allen, 2-1

Tims Toyota Center    Wed, Mar 21, 2012

Kevin Petovello scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Arizona Sundogs held off the challenges of Allen in a tough 2-1 win.

Petovello provided Arizona with the game-winning tally when he scored 1:56 into the the first period. Kyle Hood assisted on the tally.

The Sundogs' Mike Spillane was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 36 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Spillane will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.64.

Arizona was led by Craig Macdonald, who registered one goal and one assist. Macdonald scored short handed 18:53 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Arizona. The Sundogs found themselves down a man on Adam Smyth's roughing. Luke Erickson picked up the assist.

Arizona excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Sundogs' offense was clicking better than usual and put 27 shots on goal during the game, better than the 23.8 shots per game they average.

Allen did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Allen puts an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. Allen forced Arizona goalie Spillane to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Allen was led by Jeff Martens, who scored the team's only goal. Martens scored 7:16 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Arizona. Erik Adams provided the assist.

The Sundogs incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors and had no power play opportunities. Jon Groenheyde rejected 25 shots on goal for Allen.
