Evansville uses shootout to best Fort Wayne, 5-4 (3-1 SO)

Nicklas Lindberg scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Evansville IceMen picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (3-1 SO) win over the Fort Wayne Komets.

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Fort Wayne's shootout goal was scored by Brett Smith. Evansville's other shootout goals were scored by Todd Robinson and Lindberg.

The IceMen were led by Matt Gens, who grabbed one goal. Gens scored on the power play 2:57 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Evansville. A holding penalty on Bryant Molle had put Evansville on the power play. Robinson picked up the assist.

In the losing effort, the Komets were sparked by Kaleigh Schrock, who had one goal and two assists. Schrock scored 13:22 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Brent Henley assisted on the tally.

The IceMen put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Fort Wayne to score on any of its four power plays. Evansville put 33 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.9 it averages per game.

Evansville additionally got points from Josh Beaulieu, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Malcolm Gwilliam, who also tallied one goal and one assist. John Ronan also scored for Evansville. In addition, Evansville received assists from Karl Linden and Bryan Gillis, who contributed one a piece.

The Komets' defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 16 shots between them. The 38 shots that Fort Wayne put on net surpassed the Komets' average of 34.3 shots per game this season.

Fort Wayne also got a goal from Smith as well. Other players who recorded assists for Fort Wayne were Stephon Thorne, who had two and Jesse Bennefield and Chris Auger, who each chipped in one.

Bryan Gillis made 34 saves for the IceMen on 38 shots. Evansville incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Nick Boucher made seven saves before being replaced by Gerry Festa, who took the otl and made 21 saves. Fort Wayne incurred five minutes in penalty time with two minors.
