Fort Wayne uses shootout to best Arizona, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

The Fort Wayne Komets and the Arizona Sundogs both failed to score in overtime, but Fort Wayne won the game 5-4 (1-0 SO) after Frankie DeAngelis' deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams.

The Komets saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Fort Wayne made the score 4-2 on a goal by Stephon Thorne at 15:12 in the second period. Arizona evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Nathan ONabigon at 16:24 in the third period.

DeAngelis was all over the ice for the Komets, as he grabbed two goals in the win. DeAngelis found the back of the net on the power play 5:36 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Fort Wayne and again while 4:43 into the second to make the score 3-1 Fort Wayne.

The defensemen of Fort Wayne were also effective in the Sundogs' zone, and came away with three goals. By firing 47 shots on goal, the Komets exceeded the 31.6 shots they average per game this year.

Fort Wayne was led by DeAngelis, who had two goals. Fort Wayne also got a goal from Artem Podshendyalov as well. More assists for Fort Wayne came via Jamie Lovell, who had two and Tom Mele, Bobby Chaumont, Jamie Milam, Chris Auger, and Kaleigh Schrock, who contributed one a piece.

Arizona could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 23 minutes in penalties during the game. The 35 shots that the Sundogs put on net surpassed Arizona's average of 31.1 shots per game this season.

The Sundogs were helped by Jean-Philipp Chabot, who racked up two goals. Chabot scored the first of his two goals at 11:02 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Fort Wayne. Craig Macdonald assisted on the tally. Chabot's next tally made the score 4-3 Fort Wayne with 14:24 left in the third period. Macdonald provided the assist. Arizona additionally got points from Olivier Proulx, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Arizona were Adam Smyth, Steve Kaunisto, Samson Mahbod, and Tyler Butler, who each chipped in one.

The Komets' Gerry Festa stopped 31 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Fort Wayne totaled 29 minutes in penalty time with two minors and three majors and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Scott Reid made 42 saves for Arizona on 46 shots. The Sundogs registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
