Fort Wayne hangs on, beats Bloomington 5-3

The Fort Wayne Komets took the lead against the Bloomington Blaze in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory.

Fort Wayne took over the lead for good with a goal by Brett Smith at 14:45 in the first period. Bobby Chaumont assisted on the tally.

The Komets excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. By firing 34 shots on goal, Fort Wayne exceeded the 29 shots it averages per game this year.

The Komets were helped by Kaleigh Schrock, who tallied one goal and one assist. Schrock scored 15:55 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Fort Wayne. David Starenky provided the assist. Fort Wayne additionally got points from Smith, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Artem Podshendyalov, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Jean-Michel Rizk, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Tom Mele also scored for Fort Wayne. Other players who recorded assists for Fort Wayne were Stephon Thorne and Leo Thomas, who each chipped in one.

Fort Wayne was unable to stop Bloomington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blaze eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

Bloomington was helped by Jon Booras, who tallied one goal and one assist. Booras scored 1:34 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Fort Wayne. Jordy Trottier picked up the assist. Bloomington also got points from Trottier, who also registered one goal and one assist. Bloomington got a goal from Doug Krantz as well. In addition, Bloomington received assists from Craig Cescon, who had two and Omar Pacha and Brandon Richardson, who contributed one each.

The Komets' Gerry Festa stopped 35 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Fort Wayne incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Brian Mahoney-Wilson took the loss and made 14 saves before being replaced by Zane Kalemba who made 15 saves. The Blaze incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
