The West Virginia ACHA D2 hockey team was triumphant in their return to Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena, defeating the James Madison Dukes 5-1
The Mountaineers opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game when Chace Shepard scored on an assist from Nicholas Mohardt.
WVU then added a second goal with 12:58 left in the first period when Mark Stankiewiicz assisted Nathan Panchisin.
JMU scored their first goal with 2:51 left in the second period, making the score 2-1, but the Mountaineers scored 43 seconds later when Jacob Meier and Nathan Panchisin assisted Alex Delaney to make the score 3-1.
An unassisted goal from Panchisin 29 seconds into the period and a Mohardt goal assisted by Nicholas Lane and Chace Shepard gave West Virginia a 5-1 win over The Dukes.
WVU head coach Tyler Kutek was pleased to see the team return to the win column
"It feels good to get back into the win column, especially after a tough weekend last weekend, feels good to get back, guys worked hard, kept it simple and we got the win!"
Next up for the Mountaineers is a trip south, where they will play the North Carolina Tar Heels at Memorial Ice Arena, playing UNC on Saturday Jan. 28, at 8:00 p.m., followed by another game at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
