D3 loses 3-2 late to Cal U

The West Virginia ACHA D3 hockey lost 4-3 on a late power play against the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans at Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena, falling to 3-7.

 

The Vulcans took the lead just 75 seconds into the game, and double their lead just over four minutes later with 15:25 left in the first period.

 

The Mountaineers scored 11:22 with left in the first period, with Carter Kline assisting Colin McCarthy.

 

West Virginia tied the game with 18:33 left in the second period, as Andrew Strickland scored, assisted by Christian Young and Dan Arthurs, but the Vulcans scored five minutes later to make the score 3-2.

 

With 6:36 left in the second period, Jack Mock scored off an Adonte Shepard and JJ Peters assist to equalize the score.

 

With just 41.9 seconds left, the Vuclans used a power play to their advantage, taking a 4-3 lead to win the game.
 

WVU head coach Rew Piatt said the team played better than they did the night before which is why it was much closer.

"It's a team that definitely plays similar to we do, so we match up well, I think we got back to our game which we didn't have last night, which is why that one ended up 5-1 and this one was so tight. Gotta pull some good out of some of those losses and I think this is one we got to look at it optimistically and keep sticking with the right stuff
."
 

WVU is back in action Friday night as they play the Kent State Golden Flashes at Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena at 10 p.m.
