We had a large crowd on hand for Military Appreciation Night and the Season Finale of the Arizona Winter League at Desert Sun Stadium last night. A mixture of Military, Snow Birds, and local residents were out enjoying themselves and watching a little bit of baseball action between the Yuma Scorpions vs Saskatchewan Silver Sox.
Although the game was not very close in the end, the crowd had a fantastic time cheering on these young men (most of them young anyways). There was a great mixture of attractions from Blimpies Sub Sandwiches, who brought their mascot to entertain the younger crowd, and they fed the Military in the crowd with complimentary Sub Sandwiches.
One of the more exciting moments throughout the night was when Jim McDermott flew his airplane directly over the outfield grass and dropped a load of money onto the scattered children on the field below. Jim McDermott is our Booster Club President and owner of Let's Fly, his company where he teaches people to fly aircrafts, starting with his Prop Plane which he showed off for the crowd.
The evening was capped off by a beautifully patriotic firework sponsored by the Cocopah Resort and Casino, as everyone watched in wonder as the loud and bright fireworks eluminated the dark sky over Desert Sun Stadium as Bruce Springstein's, Born in the USA filled the air for all to enjoy. The show came to a booming conclusion as the Marine Hymn sang out loud and proud.
It was a night to remember for all those involved, and was a perfect end to the season. As the Arizona Winter League comes to a close, we only have the playoffs left, on Monday we will crown a Champion, and send these young men on their way to their live's future endeavors.
