The Clarington Eagles relied on the scoring touch of Braden Gray, who netted two goals, to beat the Lakefield Chiefs, 3-1.
Gray found the back of the net 13:11 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Clarington and again while 16:34 into the third to make the score 3-1 Clarington.The win by Clarington clinched the best of seven series at 4-2.
The Eagles pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 24 penalty minutes.
Clarington put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Lakefield to score on any of its eight power plays. The Eagles' offense rang up 36 shots on the Chiefs' net.
Clarington also got a goal from Mackenzie Morissette as well. More assists for Clarington came via Chris Elms, Ben Pitchforth, and Mark Gavrilov, who contributed one each.
Lakefield excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Clarington's defense shut down the Chiefs' forwards for much of the game, and Lakefield got off only 13 shots during the contest.
The Chiefs were led by Jordan MacLean, who scored the team's only goal. MacLean scored 17:29 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Aaron Vatcher picked up the assist.
Zack Wainman rejected 12 shots on goal for the Eagles. Michael Christie recorded 33 saves for Lakefield. The Chiefs ended with 27 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For Lakefield, Riley Campbell was ejected from the game.
