What outfielders can learn from Pillar...besides being fearless

    Date:06/28/2016  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

Superman.  The nickname is appropriate as we have all seen Kevin Pillar launch himself into the air after covering 80 feet and reaching speeds of nearly 20 m.p.h. It seems like these types of catches are a nightly occurrence for Pillar. Does anyone remember back a few years ago when there were cries from Nationals fans saying that Bryce Harper needed to play with a more cautious style?...

Walks will kill you on the mound!

    Date:04/27/2016  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

Taking a look at the numbers from last year, in particular BB/IP (walks per inning pitched), I was curious to see what they were. Our Winter travel team had struggled with walks in Kamloops. Not one team in AA was in double digits for walks (all in triple digits!) and a couple teams had more BB’s than IP! You just aren’t going to win many ball games with those stats...period....

    Random Thoughts: Jamboree Edition

    Date:04/26/2016  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

    1. Have the hitter in the hole get the foul balls First, for accuracy the official term for the next hitter on deck is actually "in the hold".  Originating from the sailing term where a boat was "in the hold" prior to being "on deck".  I learned this little tidbit from Vin Scully and, in my opinion, Mr Scully can never be wrong. Regardless of the term that y...

Being Flexible as a Baseball Player

    Date:08/01/2015  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

As the title says it's really important that you are flexible as a baseball player in your career. Now by saying flexible I'm not talking about being a yoga master, although that can benefit your baseball career (see Dr Durnin's video at the end of this post for help with physical flexibility)! What I'm talking about is that you have to be flexible with anything that might happen t...

How do you walk off the bus?

    Date:06/17/2015  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

This has been an exciting start to the 2015 season for our league.  A tournament win by our winter travel team in Kamloops focused some attention on Babe Ruth before we played our first league game.  Coaches from three Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) programs have all shown considerable interest in a number of Babe Ruth players.  After seeing our AAA Blues in Medici...

Parents and Coaches: Effective Communication with your Players

    Date:06/10/2015  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

FOCUS ON THE PROCESS: When players are preoccupied with the outcome (hits, wins, runs, etc), they tend to go away from the things that make them successful. Hitters start to press when they come up with the bases loaded and swing at bad pitches. Players have difficulty finding positives in games that they lose or they do not learn from games they win. Hitters try to do too much when they...

    Random Observations - Baseball IQ

    Date:05/30/2015  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

A few things that I noticed this week related to baseball IQ: First baseman holding the runner with runners at 1st & 2nd.  The runner at first base is not going to steal 2nd with a runner in front of them.  There is NO NEED to hold the runner and limit your defensive range. Base runner going 1st to 3rd on a ball that didn't leave the infield.  An INCREDIBLE display of ba...

Dealing with the Disappointment of Being Cut

    Date:05/30/2015  Source:Babe Ruth Calgary Baseball

    1. This is not the end...it should be the beginning: Whether you made the team or you were left off the roster, it is important to remember that your work is just getting started.  For the players who were cut, it tends to go one of two directions.  Players either become extremely motivated to improve in the areas that were exposed during the evaluation or they become de-motivated b...
