Denver rides Patterson to victory over Arizona, 4-1

Tims Toyota Center    Wed, Apr 23, 2014

The Denver Cutthroats relied on the sparkling performance of Kent Patterson in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Arizona Sundogs.

After the loss made the series score 3-1 in the best of seven series, Arizona faces elimination next time out.

Denver pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 34 penalty minutes.

The Cutthroats were paced by Daniel Barczuk, who registered one goal. Barczuk scored 18:54 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Denver. Robin Soudek picked up the assist.

Denver stifled the Sundogs' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cutthroats relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Mikael Tam, AJ Gale and Garett Bembridge took 14 of the team's 24 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Denver additionally got points from Troy Schwab, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Tam, who also had two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Denver received assists from TJ Fox, who had one and Steve Kaunisto, who had two.

Arizona put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Denver to score on any of its five power plays. The Sundogs kept the Cutthroats' goalie busy throughout the game, and Patterson made 54 saves on 55 shots.

Arizona was led by David Rutherford, who took six shots.

Adam Brown recorded 20 saves for the Sundogs. Arizona totaled 42 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and two majors and went 0-for-7 on the power play. For the Sundogs, Justin Pender was ejected from the game.
