St. Charles uses shootout to best Quad City, 6-5 (3-1 SO)

The St. Charles Chill and the Quad City Mallards both failed to score in overtime, but St. Charles won the game 6-5 (3-1 SO) after Chad Costello's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Quad City's shootout goal was scored by Mike Hellyer. In addition to the clincher, the Chill got shootout goals from Kyle Kraemer and Costello.

St. Charles saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Chill made the score 4-2 on a goal by Kyle OKane at 18:01 in the second period. The Mallards evened things up at 5-5 on a goal by Mike Stinziani at 19:05 in the third period.

St. Charles forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The Chill surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Charles' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Quad City power plays.

St. Charles also got points from David Strathman, who also finished with one goal and one assist. St. Charles also got a goal from Justin Levac as well. In addition, St. Charles received assists from Dean Moore, Steve Makway, Ryan Berard, and Martin Hlinka, who each chipped in one and Costello and Anthony Perdicaro, who contributed two a piece.

Quad City was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and two majors for 28 minutes in penalty time. The Mallards had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Quad City forced the Chill goalie Robert Moss to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots.

Quad City additionally got points from Vladimir Nikiforov, who also had one goal and one assist, Hellyer, who also finished with one goal and two assists, and Jim McKenzie, who also registered one goal and two assists. More assists for Quad City came via Michael Monfredo, Darren McMillan, and Matt Duffy, who each chipped in one.

Moss recorded 42 saves for St. Charles. The Chill registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Ty Rimmer rejected 23 shots on goal for the Mallards.
