Allen uses shootout to best Arizona, 4-3 (1-0 SO)

Darryl Bootland netted the deciding goal for the Allen Americans in the shootout as Americans prevailed over the Arizona Sundogs, 4-3 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout.

Allen overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Americans fell behind 3-2 after a goal by Arizona's Kyle Hood at 16:49 in the second period. Allen tied things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Scotty Howes at 17:33 in the second period.

Howes had two goals to lead the Americans to victory.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:28 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Allen racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and four majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The Americans had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Allen excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Americans' offense was clicking better than usual and put 35 shots on goal during the game, better than the 28.9 shots per game they average.

More assists for Allen came via Tyler Ludwig, who had two and Nino Musitelli, Anthony Maiani, Jamie Schaafsma, and Trevor Ludwig, who contributed one a piece.

The Sundogs were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and four majors for 62 minutes in penalty time. Arizona surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Sundogs put 36 shots on net during the contest, more than the 23.6 they average per game.

Arizona was helped by Pascal Morency, who grabbed one goal. Morency scored 17:32 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Arizona. Jake Hauswirth picked up the assist. Arizona additionally got points from Hauswirth, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Arizona were Jeff Kyrzakos, Chad Nehring, Mario Larocque, and Derek LeBlanc, who each chipped in one.

Steve Silverthorn rejected 33 shots on goal for Allen. The Americans registered two goals on nine power play opportunities. For Allen, Jason Deitsch was ejected from the game. The Sundogs' Adam Russo stopped 31 shots out of the 34 that he faced. Arizona ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kevin Petovello was ejected from the game.
