New York, NY — This past weekend the NYU Violets opened ESCHL league play by defeating Syracuse University 6-2 and 4-3, respectively.
Friday night, the NYU Violets triumphed 6-2 against the #18 ranked Orange. NYU ended the first period with spirits high after the first goal of the game from freshman Reagan Wortz, assisted by Giancarlo Pochintesta and Frankie Horowitz, put them up 1-0 Syracuse. The tension increased during the second and third period as multiple penalties were being called on both the Violets and Syracuse Orange. NYU scored two more power play goals by sophomore James Long and senior Sam Rappaport with assists to Aidan Wright, Elias Cohen, and Parker Richards, followed by two Orange power play goals giving NYU a one goal advantage. In retaliation NYU scored two more goals, both by Frankie Horowitz, ending the second period with a 5-2 lead. Assists went to James Long, Adam Peck, and Scott Mulligan. In the final period, Syracuse tried to catch up, eventually pulling their goalie allowing NYU to score an empty netter by Rappaport, assisted by Andrew Williamson and Reagan Wortz. NYU Violets win 6-2.
Game two against the Orange on Saturday had a lively start as the Violets spent too much time on the penalty kill. Freshman Mac Brice gets NYU on the scoreboard with his first goal as a Violet, assisted by Blake Howard. NYU used the lead to bounce back through the remainder of the first period. Williamson scored the second NYU goal followed by Brice’s second Violet goal. Assists went to Elias Cohen, Kohl Donovan, and Aidan Wright. NYU ended the first period leading 4-0 after Senior Kohl Donovan scored on the power play, assisted by Howard.
The Orange attempted to recover during the second period, scoring two goals making it 4-2. In the third period they crept closer to the Violets on the scoreboard after a power play goal. Their attempt was unsuccessful as the game ended 4-3 with NYU sweeping the weekend.
NYU hopes to keep their winning streak going into this weekend’s home-and-home games against Drexel University Dragons on Saturday October 19th and Sunday October 20th.
