Danbury – Behind the power of seven Westerners’ home runs, Danbury ran away with the 13-1 win against the Sanford Mainers Thursday night. The win is their third in a row.

Danbury was held in check through the first two innings against former Danbury Westerner Brandon Backman, who mixed up his pitches and kept the Danbury bats off balance. It was not until the third inning where Sonny Ulliana, a soon-to-be representative at the home run derby and All-Star game in Vermont on Sunday, would get the Westerners on the board with his tenth home run of the season.

That home run would open the flood gates for Danbury, who would score three more in the fourth inning, five runs in the fifth inning, and one more run in the sixth to open up a 10-0 lead, more than enough for starting pitcher Joe Vail and company on the mound. Each of the ten runs coming from home runs, including two home runs and six runs batted in from Alex Bello and a two home run game from Cam Masterman.

Vail went the first five innings, picking up the win, while allowing five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Brian Rodriguez relieved him, pitching two scoreless innings. J.J. Goetz came in and allowed an unearned run

Danbury continues to remain hot at the right time, as they keep pace with the Mystic Schooners, who currently possess the final playoff spot in the NECBL Southern Division.

“It’s imperative that they know that these games still matter,” said manager Josh Parrow. “If they do what they’ve done, we will be able to make a final push.”

On Friday, Danbury travels to Newport to take on the Gulls in a pivotal game that can help clarify the playoff picture in the Southern Division.
