Danbury – Mystic would start the scoring early and ran away with the 10-4 victory over the Danbury Westerners Saturday evening.
The game did not get off to the start the Westerners had hoped for. After starting pitcher Justin Campbell gave up back to back hits to put runners at second and third to lead off the game, first baseman T.T. Bowens cleared the fence in right field for a three-run home run to give Mystic the early lead.
Now playing from behind, Danbury would cut the lead down to one thanks to the power of Vinny Bailey. With one out and Cameron Cerruto on first base, Bailey would knock a ball over the left field fence to make it 3-2 Schooners. The two run shot would be his fourth home run of the summer.
Mystic would respond with a mix of situational hitting and more power. The Schooners would get into the Danbury bullpen in the fourth inning and began to capitalize. After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Mystic would tack on three runs in the fifth, two coming from Steve Barmakian’s two-run home run which expanded the lead to 7-2.
Danbury would add on a run thanks to an RBI groundout by Luke Brown to cut the lead to 7-3. However, it would be difficult to stop the Mystic bats, who would add on two more runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh.
The loss was charged to Justin Campbell, who ran into trouble early, giving up four runs in just three innings of work. The win went to Alex Steigler, who pitched five full innings while surrendering three runs and striking out four.
Danbury, now losers of four of their last five since opening the season 5-0 make the trip to Martha’s Vineyard to take on the Sharks Sunday evening.
