South Kingston – The Westerners’ bats were consistent but the pitching staff struggled on their way to a 10-4 loss to the Ocean State Wave Monday night.

Danbury’s success early in the season is credited to scoring first and playing with a lead. They did so in the top of the second inning. The Westerners loaded the bases with two out after a single and a pair of walks. Center fielder Jack McCarthy would bloop a single into left field, scoring Nick Lorusso but Caleb Upshaw would be thrown out at home base to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, starting pitcher Jay Alvarez ran into trouble. After allowing a leadoff double to Garrett Hodges, he retired the next two batters and looked to escape the jam. He would be unable to retire any of the next seven batters before getting the third out, ultimately allowing seven runs and putting Danbury in an early hole.

Danbury would score in each of the next three innings but could not cut the deficit to anything lower than five as the Ocean State bats kept hitting. While the offense hit their stride at the plate, the pitching staff allowed ten runs to go along with ten hits and ten walks.

The loss was charged to Jason Alvarez, who allowed seven runs in two innings of work while the win was credited to Kyle O’Neil, who pitched three innings in relief. The Westerners look to snap their three game losing streak at home Tuesday evening when they welcome the Keene Swampbats to Rogers Park.
