By Madi Perez

New York, NY—The New York University hockey team finished their regular season this past weekend where they split the two game series against the University of Delaware at Chelsea Piers.

Friday night’s game was kicked off with a ceremonial puck drop by New York University President Andrew Hamilton. President Hamilton was joined at the game by several members of NYU’s Board of Trustees.

After a high-energy, but scoreless, first period, NYU was sent to the penalty box four times in the matter of five minutes early in the second period. The University of Delaware capitalized by scoring three power play goals and two even strength goals, bringing the second period to a close with Delaware leading 5-0.

At the beginning of the third period, UD was sent to the box for slashing. Taking full advantage of the power play, sophomore Frank Horowitz scored NYU’s first goal of the evening. Junior Scott Mulligan and freshman Adam Peck picked up the assists. Delaware scored again, keeping their 5 goal lead. After another Delaware penalty, sophomore Parker Richards scored with assists going to senior John Kowalewski and freshman Blake Howard bringing to score to 6-2. Delaware would score one more time in the third to close out Friday’s game with a 7-2 Fighting Blue Hens victory.

Saturday was the Violets last home game of the season and Senior Night. Before the puck drop, with family members on-hand, NYU Hockey honored the six graduating seniors James Moeller, Eric Boyda, Mason Gallegos, John Kowalewski, Jack Orne and Hamilton Whyte.

The puck dropped, and NYU’s Frank Horowitz was quick to score the first goal of the night. Sophomore, Dillon Keay, and Adam Peck picked up the assist. After a few roughing penalties from both teams, the first period ended NYU leading 1-0.

Despite the second period starting with an NYU power play, Delaware scored a short-handed goal less than two minutes into the period. Delaware soon took a 2-1 lead after scoring a power play goal. With just 3 seconds left in the second period, Horowitz scored his second goal of night tying the game 2-2. Adam Peck picked up his second assist and junior Tiger Yan got his first assist of the night.

Tensions were high in the third period, especially for the seniors as this was their last time playing at Chelsea Piers. Halfway through the period, senior Jack Orne scored an incredible breakaway goal giving NYU a one goal lead. Keay received his second assist of the night. However, as time expired, the officials ruled that Delaware tied the score taking the game into overtime.

5 minutes on the clock, and overtime was underway. With just under two minutes left, freshman Blake Howard, scored the game winning goal sending the arena into a frenzy. Junior Scott Mulligan assisted on the goal giving the Violets an emotional 4-3 win to close out the regular season.

Playoff Time! The Violets will be hitting the road on Friday, March 15th for the 1st round of the ESCHL playoffs in West Chester, PA. NYU will face off against Syracuse University at 1pm.
