NYU SPLITS HOME-AND-HOME SERIES WITH URI
By Julian Robinson
After dropping a weekend series against SUNY Stony Brook, the Violets looked to return to winning ways on home ice against the University of Rhode Island Rams.
The first of the two games proved to be a strong, but unsuccessful affair for NYU. The Rams capitalized early, scoring a goal seven minutes into the 1st period and outshooting NYU 16-8 after twenty minutes. Rhode Island would continue controlling the game into the 2nd period, scoring two more unanswered goals to make it 3-0. However, a five-minute major penalty for the Rams sparked a momentum switch in the period, leading the way for two NYU power play goals from forwards Scott Mulligan and Frankie Horowitz to close things up at 3-2. URI would answer back, scoring two goals to widen their lead to 5-2 after 40 minutes of play. Mulligan would be the only goal scorer in the 3rd period, cementing a 5-3 victory for the visiting Rams.
The following game turned out to be a different story for the Violets. The scoreless first period turned to be a battle of the goaltenders, with NYU’s Adam Salisbury stopping 13 shots, and URI’s netminder keeping 12 pucks out of the net. It wasn’t until midway through the second period that NYU would tally a goal, with Scott Mulligan scoring a power play goal. The next NYU goal came two minutes into the 3rd period, with forward Kohl Donovan beating the URI keeper with a wicked wrist shot. An empty-netter from forward Jack Orne secured a 3-0 NYU victory, as well as a shutout for junior goaltender Adam Salisbury.
