TWO OUT OF THREE AINT BAD

Date:  Source: ESU Ice Hockey

The Warriors went into last weekend with a healthy helping of three games at the East Coast Showdown down in Aston, Pa at IceWorks. The team's first goal was to win the first two games of the tournament because they were also league games then they could go into their game on Sunday and try to win the whole thing. The first two games were against Widener University and Catholic University of America. The game against Widener was the second and last meeting for these two clubs as the Warriors got the 5-4 victory at home on November 5th. In that game the Warriors were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and in this one on Friday they were able to best that by gaining a 3-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Henry Mead, Josh Barber and Chris Marrero as well as Steve Quimby notching two assists. The Warriors were carrying the play and were looking like they were on their way to an easy W. But then they made things hard for themselves at the beginning of the 2nd period as Widener was able to score a quick goal only 1:35 into the 2nd frame, cutting the ESU lead down to 3-1. Then ESU would hand Widener a 5 on 3 power play for 1:18 of game time after taking two quick penalties right after the Widener goal. Luckily the Warriors were able to kill it off and keep Widener from being able to get any closer. ESU was then able to put in 4 goals in the final 5:24 of the period and move the lead to 7-1, including a power play goal with just over a minute left thanks to a nifty play in front from Steve Quimby to Josh Barder in front for the 7th goal. Widener would score two goals in the first 7 minutes of the third period to get the lead back to 7-3 but ESU would counter again with 3 of their own to get the 10-3 victory and in doing so gained 5 total points for the tournament standings by winning all three periods and getting the W. The win also moved ESU's record to 9-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the league. Next up was a night cap against Catholic on Saturday.

Game Notes: Josh Seder - 37 saves on 40 shots, Sean McGinley (1G, 2A) and Steve Quimby (3A) with 3 points, Henry Mead (3G, 1A) with 4 points, Joe Plavin with his first career goal at ESU to win the 3rd period.

Player of the Game: Josh Barber - 2G, 3A for a total of 5 points

On Saturday night, the Warriors were facing a Catholic team that was coming in with 1-10 overall record and an 18-2 loss on Friday night to Gannon University. ESU was looking at a game that they could take over and win at a big margin to get as many points as they can to try and win the whole tournament on Sunday. Well, Catholic had other ideas and it only took them 3 minutes to let the Warriors know that this was not going to be a pushover game as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Warriors. The rest of the period would be one of multiple chances from both teams as the score stayed at 1-0. Then, finally, the Warriors were able to get a shot past all of the diving Catholic players and into the back of the net courtesy of Henry Mead at the 2:36 mark of the 1st. The period would end with a 1-1 score and Catholic buzzing after a great period they just played. The 2nd period would be one of statements and responses, first with ESU making a statement in the first 4 minutes of the period as they would jump out to a 3-1 lead to which Catholic would respond with two goals of their own to tie the score back up at 3-3. Then ESU would make another statement with two goals, the second coming from Sean McGinley at the 8:30 mark to gain the 5-3 edge. But once again, Catholic would respond with two of their own, the second coming just before the buzzer after an ESU turnover at the offensive blueline, tying the score 5-5 just before the period ended. Both teams would head back to the locker rooms, one riding high as the other looks at each wondering what is happening. The Warriors would regather themselves and come out strong in the 3rd period, tallying three goals to finish with the 8-5 victory. The second win of the weekend moves the Warriors record to 10-2-2, their first time getting 10 wins in a season since he 2014-2015 season, and their league record to 6-2-1 and puts them in first place in the American East Division with one league game left in the Fall semester before winter break. ESU tallied 9 points in their first two games of the tournament and would need a strong showing on Sunday morning against Radford to have a chance to win the tournament.

Game Notes: Josh Seder - 32 saves on 37 shots, Josh Barber (1G, 3A) with 4 points and Henry Mead with 4G, 7 in two games.

Player of the game: Sean McGinley - 2G, 2A

Now the Warriors could shift their attention to the tournament standings as they had an early morning affair with Radford University. They would need the maximum 6 points to have a strong chance to win the whole thing but they would lose that chance early as Radford would score first to cancel out the shutout. But ESU would go on to win each of the first two periods thanks to a very strong team effort and would go into the 3rd period with a 4-2 lead. But Radford would gain momentum off of some powerplay time at the end of the 2nd period and in beginning of the 3rd, as they would eventually find the back of the net off of a deflection to cut the lead down to 4-3 at the 17:34 mark of the third. The rest of the period would mostly just be a back and forth affair with Radford getting the better of the play but ESU was able to hold the one goal lead. That is until the Warriors were victimized with a 5 minute major penalty with just over 5 minutes to go in the 3rd period and Radford would seize the opportunity despite the great efforts from the ESU PK. Radford would score twice on the 5 minute powerplay and gain a 5-4 lead with 1:39 left to play in the game. Radford would take a penalty with 50 seconds left and ESU would pull the goalie for a 6 on 4 advantage but sadly none of the quality chances would find their way into the back of the net. The Warriors would fall 5-4 and would end the weekend with 11 total points in 6th place. Their overall record now sits at 10-3-2 after only their third loss in regulation this season.

Game Notes: Josh Seder - 32 saves on 37 shots

Player of the Game: Josh Barber - 11 points in 3 games (4G, 7A)

Next the Warriors have their last game of the Fall semester as they take on Johns Hopkins University at home on December 3rd. The game will be at Revolution Ice Centre and puck drop is set for 2:00pm. The Warriors will be looking to avenge a couple of 11-4 losses at the hands of the Jays from last season. Have a happy Thanksgiving.
